Why Do People Burn?
Many people in rural areas have burned trash for generations. They learned to burn from their parents and grandparents. Burning in the past was more common because there was less trash collection and recycling facilities. Today we have plenty of trash collection options, so why are people still burning?
People open burn today because they do not know it is bad for them, and more importantly, it has become a habit, and habits are hard to break! A habit is something that a person starts to do and gets used to doing. Once a person is used to their habit and doing things a certain way, it is hard to change. For example, everyday you are used to waking up, brushing your teeth, eating breakfast and getting ready for school. This routine has become a habit for you. But what happens when you wake up late one day? It feels strange to have your routine, or habit, disrupted. When you are in the habit of getting ready for school a certain way or in the habit of burning your trash and yard waste, it is difficult to change.
