Why Shouldn’t I Burn Trash?

What about campfires?

Outdoor fires such as campfires for cooking food or warming up are okay. As always, you should have an adult present at all times when there is a fire burning, and clear the area of all burnable materials. Also, have a bucket of water close by just in case the fire gets out of control. For games and fun on preventing wildfires, visit the Smokey Bear Web site: http://www.smokeybear.com/.

Another form of burning that is allowed without special permission is Native American ceremonial fires. The word native means first to live here. Long before you or I were here, Native Americans used fire for many many years. Native Americans used fire for special ways of cooking food, ceremonies during pow-wows and, clearing land to live on. Fires are important to preserving their culture, and are still used today.
